Thiruvananthapuram: UDF convener MM Hasan said that the defeat of the UDF in the 2016 assembly elections was due to the stand taken by the then KPCC president VM Sudheeran. In his book, Hasan said that Sudheeran’s dispute with the then Chief Minister Oommen Chandy over liquor policy was later thwarted by the government.

Sudheeran, who was the KPCC president, initiated the confrontation between the government and the party over liquor policy. As soon as the assembly elections were announced, divisions within the party intensified. Sudheeran’s allegations against the UDF government were used as a campaign weapon in the LDF elections. Hasan also criticized the ruling party leader for taking a “strong stance” on the opposition’s allegations.

According to the UDF convener’s book ‘Ormacheppu’, Sudheeran resigned from the post of KPCC president after the party-government clash escalated due to lack of cooperation from groups.

Hasan clarified that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had told him that his children had received death threats. Pinarayi shared with him that while he was a member of the PUC committee in the assembly, he received a silent letter threatening to kill his children. Officials are not the culprits in the Palmole case. Hasan also said that the Chief Minister had only directed the Chief Secretary to look into the Palmol case and take action. Hasan was one of the leaders who took part in the group war against K Karunakaran as the spy case and the Palmolein case that plagued the Congress leadership continued to rage in the party.
