Submarine affair: Florence Parly cancels a scheduled meeting with her British counterpart

French diplomacy has decided to cancel a meeting scheduled this week between the Minister of the Armies Florence Parly, and her British counterpart Ben Wallace, according to information reported on Monday by the newspaper Le Parisien.

This decision comes the day after the revelation, by the Swiss press, of the cancellation, at the request of Emmanuel Macron, of a visit by the President of the Swiss Confederation Guy Parmelin to Paris.

The tension does not therefore decrease between France and its allies, after the cancellation by Australia of a contract for the sale of 12 submarines, for an amount of 56 billion euros, in favor of a new contract. concluded with the United States.

The “meeting scheduled this week in London will not take place on French cancellation” indicates a ministerial source quoted by Le Parisien.

The British Ministry of Defense indicates for its part that “the United Kingdom remains in conversation with its French counterpart on these meetings” and that the two countries continue “to have a close and fruitful defense relationship with France which remains a trusted ally ”.

As a reminder, on Friday, France recalled its ambassadors to the United States and Australia for “consultations”, at the request of Emmanuel Macron.

To justify this strong decision, the head of French diplomacy, Jean-Yves Le Drian, denounced “the duplicity, contempt and lies” of his American and Australian allies, in the affair of this abortive sale of 12 sous- sailors to Australia.

“When you are an ally, you do not deal with such brutality, (…) a major partner like France”, he declared on Saturday during a televised intervention on France 2, assuring that he ” there really is a crisis ”between the three powers.

He believes, moreover, that the method employed by Joe Biden in this affair, resembles that of Donald Trump “without the tweets”, with a “form of solemn declaration rather unbearable”.

Referring to “a major crisis of confidence”, Jean-Yves Le Drian who had himself negotiated this contract when he was Minister of Defense under François Hollande, had mentioned his “bitterness”.
