United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk spoke at the interactive dialogue meeting on Myanmar held within the scope of the 54th Session of the UN Human Rights Council.
Emphasizing that the people of Myanmar are exposed to terrible attacks, open human rights violations, and the destruction of their livelihoods and hopes every day, Türk said that the human rights situation in Myanmar has worsened since the last report they published in July.
Türk stated that in Myanmar, we are faced with a brutal system in which the people are oppressed to protect the interests of the army.
Stating that the “meaningless” military attacks in Myanmar have further aggravated the human rights crisis, Türk said, “Reliable sources confirmed that 4 thousand 108 people were killed by the army and its forces until yesterday. Land operations have documented the killing of at least 10 people, 22 mass murders.” “The testimonies say that in most of these operations, soldiers entered villages, captured and executed those who did not escape.” said.
“150 people were sentenced to death without their right to a fair trial”
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk stated that the rule of civil law in Myanmar has been eliminated by the army’s deliberate erosion of the foundations of governance and justice in the country, and continued:
“Reliable sources reported that 24 thousand 836 people were arrested, 19 thousand 264 people were still detained, and 150 people were deprived of their right to a fair trial and sentenced to death by military-controlled courts. More than 7 thousand 368 people were arrested, most of them in a few minutes and without a defense lawyer. “Only one instance is known so far in which a defendant was acquitted, and this decision resulted in the dismissal of the judge who ruled in favor of the defendant.”
Pointing out that the denial of access to humanitarian aid across the country has caused dramatic consequences on food, Türk stated that rice, the staple food of the Myanmar people, has become extremely limited in many regions.
Turk said, “New thinking on Myanmar is needed to end this indescribable tragedy. I reiterate my call on all countries and other influential actors to support efforts to alleviate this crisis and ensure that all vulnerable people in Myanmar can exercise their fundamental rights and receive all necessary assistance.” .” said.
Military coup in Myanmar
The Myanmar army took over the government on February 1, 2021, after allegations of fraud in the 2020 general elections and political tension in the country.
The army detained many officials and ruling party executives, especially the country’s de facto leader and Minister of Foreign Affairs Aung San Suu Kyi, and declared a state of emergency for one year.
