DECRYPTION – In the early days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a commercial satellite network came under attack. Undoubtedly the first real war operation with consequences in space.
The culprit has almost been named. It took a month for cyber-investigators from Western intelligence agencies and forensic experts from Mandiant, a cybersecurity specialist, to consolidate their bundles of clues. All of them have carefully analyzed the intrusion which targeted, in the early days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Ka-Sat commercial satellite network of the Viasat company, depriving access to the Internet and to means of communication, a part of the Ukrainian army. Devoid of sovereign capacities, it used a private network. In France, the Space Command had confirmed the attack.
