Yonhap news agency reported that Korean prosecutors on January 24 asked the court to extend the detention period for impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol to serve the investigation of the declaration of martial law on December 3, 2024.
Previously, the Corruption Investigation Office for Senior Officials (CIO) transferred the case file to the prosecution for prosecution because the CIO did not have that authority over the president. The CIO proposed prosecuting Mr. Yoon for leading the rebellion by declaring martial law and abusing power by sending soldiers to parliament to prevent lawmakers from voting to abolish martial law.
Mr. Yoon was officially arrested on January 19 and according to the law can be detained for 10 days, which can be extended for another 10 days. If the court approves, the impeached president could be detained until February 6, according to South Korean officials. Besides, he may also be asked by the prosecution to participate in interrogation during this time.
The prosecution is said to be preparing to prosecute in case the court rejects the request to extend the detention order.
In addition to the above criminal investigation, Mr. Yoon is also being considered for impeachment by the Constitutional Court. If found guilty, he will lose his position and a presidential election will take place within 60 days. On the contrary, Mr. Yoon will be restored to his position. Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol is being held at the detention center in Uiwang city, south of Seoul.
