The National Fire Agency said rescue officials were carrying out rescue operations for passengers of the Jeju Air plane that crashed at the airport in Muan city, about 290 kilometers south of Seoul. He told that this plane was returning from Bangkok with 181 people. The agency said that at least 85 people died in this accident, including 46 women and 39 men. He said that 32 fire engines and several helicopters have been deployed to control the fire. Footage of the accident broadcast by YTN television showed that the Jeju Air plane skidded off the runway with its landing gear apparently locked. After this the plane collided with a concrete barrier. The Transport Ministry said that this incident happened at 9:03 am local time. Local TV channels broadcast footage in which flames were seen coming out of the plane and a thick plume of black smoke was visible. Emergency officials in Muan said they were investigating the cause of the fire. He told that it appears that there was a malfunction in the ‘landing gear’ of the plane. The Transport Ministry said that the plane was returning from Bangkok and two Thai citizens were also among the passengers. Thai Prime Minister Paitongtarn Shinawatra expressed her deep condolences to the families of those affected by the accident through a post on social media platform ‘X’. Paitongtarn said that he has ordered the Foreign Ministry to provide immediate assistance. It is one of the deadliest accidents in South Korea’s aviation history. Earlier, in 1997, a Korean Airlines plane had crashed in Guam in South Korea, killing 228 people. This incident has happened at a time when South Korea is facing a major political crisis due to the imposition of ‘martial law’ by its President Yun Suk Yeol and the subsequent impeachment against him. South Korean lawmakers last Friday passed a motion to impeach acting President Han Duk-soo and suspended his duties, prompting Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok to take charge.
