Mogadishu’s municipal police chief, Colonel Farhan Mahmoud, escaped an assassination attempt on Saturday, carried out with a car bomb driven by a suicide bomber, in the district of Hodan, in the center of the capital, Mogadishu .
According to a brief Somali police statute on its official Facebook page, “a suicide bomber driving a car bomb targeted the police chief’s convoy at the Banadir crossroads in the Hodan district in the center of the capital.”
The statute also said that “the police chief survived the attack.”
And also to specify that the suicide attack had made several dead and wounded, without revealing neither their number, nor the details concerning their identities.
Until 0750 GMT, no party had yet claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing, but Somali authorities generally point the finger at the Al-Shabab movement in such attacks.
Somalia has been waging a war for years against Al-Shabab, a movement founded in early 2004. This armed movement, ideologically affiliated with Al-Qaeda, has adopted numerous terrorist operations which have left hundreds of people dead in Somalia.
