Qualcomm Technologies announced a major update to the Snapdragon X Series platform portfolio with the launch of the new Snapdragon simultaneously reducing energy consumption by up to 54%. This dramatic advance in CPU performance sets a new standard in mobile computing, allowing users to get more done with greater efficiency. Qualcomm showed in the field what Snapdragon X Plus is capable of doing at an ad hoc event in London, where it immediately became clear that this chip is a champion in artificial intelligence-based systems.
Snapdragon Suffice it to say that the processor is capable of reasoning up to 30 tokens per second in the use of generative AI, and only with a local process that does not require an Internet connection. Qualcomm demonstrated new AI-optimized applications and features running on the 45 TOPS NPU, including code generation in Visual Studio Code via Codegen, music generation in Audacity with Riffusion AI, and live caption production in OBS Studio, which provides automatic translations of 100 languages, in real time during live broadcasts.
As for security, the chip offers total protection, from components to the cloud. It supports AV1 encoding and decoding for 4K HDR video streaming and offers immersive, lossless audio thanks to the Snapdragon Sound suite, ideal for high-fidelity music and entertainment with wireless headphones. It can support up to three external UHD 60Hz monitors, ensuring a smoother and more responsive viewing experience. LPDDR5x memory with 135GB/s bandwidth enhances AI experiences and multitasking.
An important aspect is the possibility of always staying connected thanks to support for 5G and Wi-Fi 7 with HBS Multi-Link. Finally, advanced MIPI camera support delivers high-quality images and smart features like auto-framing, background blur, and facial authentication, all at low power consumption. Device makers are expected to launch PCs equipped with Snapdragon X Plus alongside devices using Snapdragon X Elite starting in mid-2024.
“The Snapdragon X series platforms deliver industry-leading experiences and are built to revolutionize the PC industry. Snapdragon artificial intelligence, especially in this time of rapid development and deployment,” commented Kedar Kondap, senior vice president and general manager of computing and gaming at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “By providing peak performance, AI capabilities and power efficiency, we are once again shifting the boundaries of what is possible in mobile computing.”
