Singapore :
Singapore’s renowned Indian classical dancer Rathi Karthigesu passed away. She was 87 years old. Bharatanatyam dancer Rathi, who belonged to an influential family in Singapore, breathed her last on Monday. He is survived by his son Anand Karthigesu, who is a lawyer by profession.
Rathi was married to Mutatambi Karthigesu, one of Singapore’s top appellate judges. Mutatambi died in 1999 at the age of 75. A few weeks after Mutatambi’s death, his daughter Sharmini (39) also passed away. His 48-year-old son Suresh left this world in 2006.
Rathi was a relative of former senior minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Former MP P. Selvadurai is his brother. Selvadurai said during an interview with ‘The Sunday Times’ in 2001 that it was because of his sister that he became interested in promoting Indian classical art.
‘Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society’ paid tribute to Rathi. Rathi served as its vice president for some time. Gayatri Sriram, director of Singapore’s Shrutilaya School of Dance, told that she had met Rathi around 1995-96 and the closeness between the two increased due to their interest in Bharatanatyam.
‘The Straits Times’ quoted Sriram as saying, “Rathi has had a profound influence on people interested in Indian dance in Singapore. She started dancing at a time when married women, especially married women, were not considered professional artists in Bharatanatyam. She continued to dance even after her marriage and became a role model for many of us.
