Crisis in eastern Ukraine
Protests in the Ukrainian capital Kiev began on November 21, 2013, after current former President Viktor Yanukovych refused to sign an Association Agreement with the European Union (EU).
Amid street and public protests, Yanukovych fled the country on February 22, 2014, and power passed to pro-Western politicians.
Following this, the pro-Russian separatists declared the so-called independence in part of the territories of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of eastern Ukraine.
Since 2014, clashes in eastern Ukraine have killed over 13,000 people.
