Speaking at the press conference on January 28, Mr. Vucevic announced his resignation to call for a calm protest and sat down in dialogue. The resignation of Prime Minister Vucevic will need the Serbian National Assembly to approve. The National Assembly has 30 days to decide to choose a new government or organize an early general election, AP reported.
Serbian government protests spread after the roof collapse of Novi Sad City (northern Serbia) in November 2024 killed 15 people. The original protest was mainly organized by students in Serbia and lasted for weeks. Protesters believe that the roof collapse came from corruption in Serbia. Mayor Novi Sad Milan Djuric also announced its resignation on January 28.
On January 27, tens of thousands of people took to the road and blocked many important traffic routes in Serbia’s Belgrade. Mr. Vucevic and President Serbia Aleksandar Vucic repeatedly called on protesters to sit in dialogue but have been rejected.
Mr. Vucevic became Serbian Prime Minister in April 2024, after the Serbian progressive party won the election. Facing the development of the Serbian government leader, the opposition parties of Serbia wanted the National Assembly to elect a provisional government, in order to “create favorable conditions for the free and fair general election”.
Prime Minister Vucevic said the direct cause of his resignation came from a female student attacked at Novi Sad on January 28. The attackers are said to be related to the Serbian radical party. Mr. Vucevic also said that protests were and held from abroad, with the purpose of harming Serbia.
