SBT approached Brax, a well-known marketing company in the football market, and made a proposal to broadcast the 2024 Copa América. Globo is already negotiating with the company. Brax won the competition promoted by Conmebol (South American Football Confederation), and will sell the matches to Brazilian TV.
Silvio Santos’ TV and the Marinho family’s broadcaster participated in direct competition from Conmebol, but Brax’s proposal was considered more interesting as it had a guarantee of a minimum receipt of US$ 10 million (R$ 49 million at current prices) from the from the company to Conmebol.
The amount will be raised from sales and other market opportunities. SBT got in touch after learning that Globo was already negotiating the rights. The broadcaster wants to have more football events, and has been investing in the area. Cléber Machado, former Globo narrator, was recently hired.
SBT’s proposal only covers open TV. Globo is negotiating an agreement for all media. The Rio broadcaster and Brax have done business before: the company signed contracts with some teams for the World Cup qualifiers and with Series B of the Brazilian Championship.
In the last Copa América, the event was acquired by Silvio Santos’ broadcaster for US$6 million (R$28.7 million at current prices). Globo could not make proposals because it was broken with the entity, due to the termination of the Libertadores contract in 2020.
The 2024 Copa América will be held in the United States, in June next year. In total, 16 teams will compete in the tournament.
