The world’s first unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with laser weapons was presented at the 8th Science Festival in the Turkish province of Konya.
The name of the drone was given by Turkish Interior Minister Suleiman Soylu in memory of a teenager who showed heroism and died at the hands of RKK militants in Trabzon province.
The Eren quadcopter has no analogues in the world.
The device was developed by specialists from the TÜBİTAK Scientific and Technical Research Council and ASİSGUARD engineers under the patronage of the Turkish Defense Industry Department.
The flight range of the new drone is up to 3000 meters. By means of a combat laser installation, the quadcopter will destroy explosive objects.
Eren is planned to be handed over to demining specialists as early as 2022 after the completion of the tests.
Police Assistant Commissioner Aykut Eroglu told Anadolu agency that the security forces are planning to use Eren to destroy unexploded ordnance or explosive devices.
According to him, the drone has already passed the first tests, successfully using laser weapons.
The Assistant Commissioner praised the drone’s performance.
“During the tests, Eren was able to laser pierce a 3mm steel sheet with a laser shot. At a distance of 500 meters, this took 90 seconds, and at a distance of 300 meters, it took 30 seconds. The quadcopter completed the same task in 10 seconds at a distance of 100 meters. The criminal department of the Turkish Interior Ministry is the first in the world to use laser weapons, which have no analogues yet, ”Eroglu said.
The sapper robots also aroused great interest among the festival visitors.
