Saakashvili transferred to prison hospital

Former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili was transferred from a prison in the city of Rustavi to a prison hospital located in the Tbilisi suburb of Gldani due to his deteriorating health condition. This is stated in the message of the Special Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia.

“Due to the deteriorating health and increased threats, prisoner Mikheil Saakashvili was transported from the 12th penitentiary to the medical institution for convicts and prisoners No. 18,” the ministry said in a statement.

Earlier, the politician’s mother Giuli Alasania told reporters that Saakashvili was taken from prison in an unknown direction.

It was also reported that a helicopter appeared over the penitentiary where the ex-president was being held.

The term of the ultimatum put forward by the opposition to the authorities has expired in Georgia. Nika Melia, the chairman of the largest opposition party United National Movement, announced a large-scale protest action in the center of Tbilisi on Monday.

Earlier, opposition leaders presented the Georgian authorities with an ultimatum demanding the transfer of ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili to a private clinic, who has been on hunger strike in prison for the 38th day.

They took 24 hours to fulfill the requirement.

“The term of the ultimatum has expired. On November 8, at 20:00, we must start the victory of freedom from Freedom Square. All to where the history of Georgia was written many times. Georgian society has never been defeated in history and will not be defeated in the near future. We will win in the name of truth, ”Melia said at the briefing.

Mikheil Saakashvili was detained on October 1 in Tbilisi after returning to Georgia for the first time since 2013.

At home, the ex-president was convicted in absentia for malfeasance and sentenced to six years in prison.

Saakashvili considers himself a political prisoner and immediately after being imprisoned went on a hunger strike in protest.

The personal doctor, lawyers and relatives speak every day about the deteriorating state of health of the ex-president and demand his transfer to a civil multidisciplinary clinic.

The authorities agree to transfer Saakashvili only to a prison hospital in Tbilisi.

Meetings are regularly held outside the Rustavi prison and in other cities of Georgia demanding Saakashvili’s hospitalization in a private hospital.
