A Russian MiG-31 fighter jet escorted a US Air Force B-1B strategic bomber over the Sea of Japan on Sunday. This was reported to reporters at the National Defense Management Center of the Russian Federation, reports TASS.
As explained in the center, the Russian airspace control found a target approaching the border over the neutral waters of the Sea of Japan. To identify it, a MiG-31 from the duty forces of the Eastern Military District was lifted into the air.
“The crew of the Russian fighter identified the air target as a US Air Force B-1B strategic bomber and escorted it over the waters of the Sea of Japan. The state border of the Russian Federation has not been violated,” the statement says.
The center also stressed that the flight of the Russian aircraft was carried out in strict accordance with international rules for the use of airspace.
