Russia-Ukraine tension: defuse on February 16?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy declared February 16 to be a day of “unity” and called on people to raise flags and sing the national anthem to celebrate. Just before February 16, Russian President Vladimir Putin also televised two meetings between him with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu. The contents exchanged during the meeting showed that – as Mr. Lavrov said – the opportunity for diplomatic measures is not over yet.

It can be seen that efforts to reduce tensions between Russia and Ukraine as well as between Russia and the West are still underway and have raised hopes that the worst scenario will not happen. However, it seems that it is still too early to be optimistic when there are still fiery words of alarm and the roar of fighters, tanks, and battleships marching majestically.

The situation on the Russian-Ukrainian border is still tense and any misstep could spark a military conflict with unpredictable consequences.

We will continue to update the latest developments on the Russia-Ukraine tension in the next newsletters of Thanh Nien Newspaper.
