Russia: ruling party wins parliamentary elections

The Russian Central Election Commission announced on Sunday evening the preliminary results of the election of members of the State Duma (the lower house of parliament), showing the progress of the ruling United Russia party.

The results from the counting of around 9% of the ballots indicate that “United Russia” advanced with 38.68%, followed by the “Communist Party of the Russian Federation” with 25.06%, and the Liberal Party. Democrat of Russia in third place with 9.6%, while the “New People” party is in fourth place with 7.88%, and the “Just Russia” party is in fifth place with 6.64%, according to the site local web “Russia Today”.

To access the State Duma, which has 450 deputies, the parties taking part in the elections must cross the threshold of 5% of the vote.

The eighth session of the State Duma was held between September 17 and 19, with the participation of 14 parties.
