Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed the need to prevent any exploitation of Afghan territory by “terrorists”.
This is what emerges from a speech held Tuesday at a press conference, with his Armenian counterpart, Ararat Mirzoyan, in the Russian capital, Moscow.
Lavrov added that Russia will support decisions that achieve peace and security in the region, bring prosperity to the Afghan people and prevent the exploitation of Afghan territory by terrorists, drug traffickers and other criminal organizations.
In turn, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said his country was following developments in Afghanistan closely, saying: “We will respect the choice of the Afghan people.”
On Tuesday, the Taliban took full control of Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport.
Since May, the Taliban have started to expand their control over Afghanistan, in parallel with the start of the withdrawal of US forces, which is expected to end on August 31.
