Giorgia Meloni plans to increase the number of illegal repatriation sites in the region. And this despite the rebellion of opposition governors, who do not intend to welcome them on their territory.
Between Rome and Fiumicino airport there is a bunker in the Ponte Galeria area behind high gates. It is a repatriation center (CPR), at first glance the equivalent of an administrative detention center (CRA) of which there are twenty-nine in France. This is where illegal foreigners are “held” before sending them home. Those who were arrested at the borders and come from a country considered safe, such as Tunisia; those who have not requested asylum and do not or no longer have a residence permit; and those who, having committed an offense, leave prison with proceedings to return them to their country.
Italy today has nine repatriation centers spread across Sicily, Sardinia, Puglia, Basilicata, Lazio, Lombardy and Friuli Venezia, with a total of only 1,105 places. Marginal therefore in reception capacity, in light of the 80,000 places reserved for asylum seekers in reception centers…
