Rohit retires from ODIs, India’s new captain against South Africa

India’s limited overs captain Rohit Sharma is likely to withdraw from the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. Rohit, who has been ruled out of the Test squad due to injury, has not recovered and will be replaced by another captain. This is India’s first ODI series since Virat Kohli was dropped as captain.

The team announcement will be made soon as the Vijay Hazare Trophy final has come to an end. If Rohit does not recover from injury, KL Rahul will be the ODI captain. In the absence of Rohit, Rahul is currently the vice-captain of the Test team. Therefore, Rahul is likely to be selected as the ODI captain.

Not only Rohit, but also Ravindra Jadeja and Akshar Patel will miss the ODIs due to injuries. Closer circles with the BCCI indicated that the selectors would meet after the conclusion of the first Test. Three players, including Rohit, will not be considered in the ODI squad due to injury. He said the final decision would be announced after a meeting of the selectors.

Rituraj Gaekwad and Venkatesh Iyer are likely to feature in the ODI squad. Though out of form, Shikhar Dhawan is likely to return to the national team. The three-match ODI series starts on January 19. Fans are eagerly awaiting Kohli’s return from the captaincy and the emergence of a new captain as India head out to start the New Year on a high note.

The first Test between India and South Africa is in progress. The game was abandoned on the second day of the match due to rain. India won the toss and elected to bat first.
