Tips for Driving Safely through Floods: After nearly 3 months of scorching heat, pre-monsoon rains have brought a lot of relief to people in many parts of the country in the last few days. However, new challenges have emerged due to the rain. Especially for those who leave their homes for daily work like office, shopping for household items, medical checkup and others. Passengers and drivers are facing problems due to waterlogging on the roads in major cities like metro and tier-1 of the country. During the rain, vehicles are facing many other problems including slipping. Also, due to waterlogging on an unknown road, one is not able to see the potholes and speed breakers. How can you protect yourself and your vehicle in such a situation, here are 5 ways suggested for safe driving.
If there is excessive waterlogging on the road, avoid it
Generally, driving on roads where the water level is above the lowest part of the car i.e. the front bumper or the lower part of the car door should be avoided. Most cars cannot run in case of high waterlogging on the road and their exhaust may get blocked and water may reach the engine through the radiator. One should avoid passing through underpasses after heavy rains as waterlogging on such roads remains for a long time.
drive slowly and at a steady speed
If you are passing through a heavy and long stretch of waterlogged road, then you should gradually slow down your vehicle and avoid stopping in the middle of the water, as this increases the chances of water entering the vehicle. In such a situation, you should also avoid accelerating or braking too fast as this can cause the car to stop. Always drive in a low gear, i.e., you should drive in first or second gear.

If the engine stops, avoid restarting it
If unfortunately you get stuck in the middle of water and the engine stops, then in such a situation the driver should not lose his confidence and should not restart the engine. On restarting, due to water, there is more pressure on the connecting rods and in such a situation it can easily break. Apart from this, if the rain water reaches the motor through intake or emission, then it can seriously damage the engine and its repair can cost a lot. In such a problem, to avoid heavy damage, get out of the car and then try to push it to a place where there is no waterlogging. When you are sure that the water has come out from the exhaust pipe and other internal parts of the car, then you can consider restarting the car.

Don’t panic
When rainwater flows into the interior of the car, its pressure can prevent the door from opening. If the door gets stuck, do not panic and stay calm. Remember, in such a situation, first of all roll down the window and get out. If this is not possible, then use a sharp or heavy object to break the window.
Check the brakes of the vehicle when you are out of danger
When the car is out of the water, use the brakes to remove moisture from them. Before you need the brakes, make sure they are working effectively. Accumulation of water can cause brake failure. In such a situation, an accident can happen to you.
