Icelandic health authorities have suspended the use of the vaccine from the American laboratory Moderna, citing risks of heart inflammation.
The health ministry said in a statement released on Friday that the country’s chief epidemiologist has decided not to use the Moderna vaccine, as long as the supply of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is sufficient.
The decision was made because of the increased incidence of myocarditis and pericarditis after the Moderna vaccine was given, according to the same source.
Long before, Sweden and Finland suspended the use of Moderna for people under the age of 30. Denmark and Norway have also completely banned the administration of the same vaccine to anyone under the age of 18.
As of Saturday evening, more than 12,147 contaminations, including 33 deaths, and 11,674 cures, have been recorded in Iceland, according to the platform for real-time global statistics “Worldometer”.
