IG Vijayakumar said Mukhtar was a terrorist who escaped after killing a Bihar street vendor. An army officer and four soldiers were killed in a clash between security forces and militants in Punch district on Monday. Among those killed was a Malayalee soldier. The shooting took place in the Surankode area a few days ago during a search operation for about five armed terrorists who had infiltrated the country.
The troops retaliated when the terrorists opened fire on the troops conducting the search. Troops had launched a search operation in the early hours of the morning in villages near Dera Ki Gali in Surankode area. The Times of India quoted Lt. Col. Devender Anand, a Jammu-based defense spokesman, as saying that the probe was carried out following reports of around five militants in the area. The soldiers, who were seriously injured in the shooting, were rushed to a nearby primary hospital but succumbed to their injuries.

The Punjab government has announced a grant of Rs 50 lakh to the families of three soldiers from Punjab who were killed in Punch.
Terrorist attacks have been on the rise in Punch and Rajouri districts in the last nine months. On August 6, troops killed two Lashkar-e-Taiba militants in a clash in the village of Bhangai in Rajouri. On July 8, the army foiled an infiltration attempt in the Sunderbani sector of Rajouri and killed two armed Pakistani militants. Two soldiers were killed in a firing incident in the Dadal area of the same sector.
Last week, two teachers, including the principal of a women’s school in Kashmir Valley, were shot dead by terrorists. The attack took place at Govt Boys Higher Secondary School in Sangam Safa area of Srinagar. The attack took place during a meeting at the principal’s office.
