Remco Evenepoel has revalidated his title as world time trial champion, this time in Zurich (Switzerland), against the same rival he beat last year, the Italian Filippo Ganna, champion in 2020 and 2021. For the Belgian, the victory marks the culmination of a dream season, double Olympic champion in Paris, where he won gold in the time trial and on the road. In this Sunday’s 46.1-kilometer race, Evenepoel won by just seven seconds over Ganna. With this victory, Evenepoel has 59 victories as a professional, the ninth this season.
The Belgian had a difficult start to the race. A few seconds before he was due to leave the ramp, his bike chain got caught. After the mechanical incident, which was resolved in time, Evenepoel got off to a good start and apparently showed no signs of nervousness.
The podium in Zurich was completed by two Italians. In addition to Ganna, who took silver, his compatriot Edouardo Affini took bronze. Spanish cycling is leaving empty-handed, far from the podium. García Pierna finished 26th and De la Cruz one place ahead with a difference of 10 seconds. However, they were more than three minutes behind the great winner of the day.
