Rafa Nadal will finally play his singles match this Sunday at 14:00 against the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, number 83 in the world. The Balearic player will also participate in this part of the tennis tournament at Roland Garros after dispelling the doubts about combining the singles competition with doubles alongside Carlos Alcaraz. “I don’t know if I’m going to play,” explained the Spaniard after the pair’s debut on Saturday against the Argentines Molteni and González, 7-6(4) and 6-5 in 1h 49m; “I’m going to talk to the team to decide what’s best to have more chances of bringing home medals for the Spanish team. Sometimes more is not more. With that I’m not saying that I’m not going to play. It’s a reflection.”
Nadal also considered it “a barbarity” to play this Sunday at noon after finishing his match yesterday at 9:00 p.m., and spending an extra hour addressing the media. The 22-time Grand Slam champion trained this morning at Roland Garros with the captain of the Spanish team, David Ferrer, and his coach, Carlos Moyà, and with a bandage on his right thigh, injured in a practice last Wednesday.
Moyà had already left Nadal’s participation in the singles draw up in the air to focus on doubles with Alcaraz, a modality that a priori offers more chances of a medal for the Balearic player and which causes him much less physical strain. But his heart has been more important than his head and the possibility of facing Novak Djokovic in the second round has also encouraged Nadal to continue in the singles draw.
