AA / Doha, Qatar
The Qatari Foreign Ministry strongly condemned on Wednesday the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse, perpetrated by armed men who attacked his home.
In a statement, the Qatari foreign ministry stressed the “need to prosecute those implicated in this horrific incident and bring them to justice as soon as possible”.
The ministry renewed his country’s rejection of all forms of violence, terrorism and criminal acts, whatever the motives and reasons.
The Qatari Foreign Ministry underlined his country’s commitment to security and stability in Haiti.
The ministry conveyed Qatar’s condolences to the family of the late president and to the government and people of Haiti.
Unidentified gunmen murdered Jovenel Moïse inside his home on Wednesday, according to a statement by Haiti’s interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph, the British “Mirror” newspaper reported.
For its part, the American agency “Associated Press” reported that the Haitian authorities have closed the international airport and declared martial law, following the assassination of the president.
Haiti has endured a political crisis for months, as the country’s capital was the scene of protests last February, in which hundreds of people participated, demanding the overthrow of the current government.
Last February, Jovenel Moïse declared, during a national speech, that the police had succeeded in foiling a plot to assassinate him.
