In the last days of Giap Thin year, the name Nguyen Thi Huong became a topic of interest for sports lovers, but sadly, not because of any achievements or medals. The fact that Vietnam’s No. 1 female rowing athlete applied to quit training at the Vinh Phuc unit because she owes domestic bonuses from 2022 to 2024 and nutritional support in 2024 once again ‘heats up’ the situation of injustice. In terms of remuneration and support for athletes, especially those who have devoted themselves to bringing glory to the country’s sports.

Previously, on December 30, 2024, Nguyen Thi Huong sent a request for leave from training from January 1, 2025 to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vinh Phuc province and Vinh Phuc Sports Training and Competition Center. In the application, she shared that 9 years of working together helped her win many national and international medals, bringing pride to Vietnam in general and Vinh Phuc province in particular. However, her family situation and lack of support made her decide to quit.
Huong affirmed that her failure to receive domestic bonuses and nutritional support in 2024 belongs to the regime of Vinh Phuc province, and is not related to the bonus regime of the Department of Sports and Physical Training.
The situation of being owed bonuses and nutritional support is not only suffered by Nguyen Thi Huong but also affects 200 coaches and athletes of 11 sports teams in Vinh Phuc. The province’s Sports Training and Competition Center must temporarily suspend regular training activities. However, Nguyen Thi Huong has received maximum support from the Vietnam Sailing Federation. She is currently training with the national team in Hai Phong, with her daily diet fully taken care of by the federation. In 2025, Huong plans to participate in two major tournaments: the Asian Championship in China in April and SEA Games 33 at the end of the year in Thailand.

Nguyen Thi Huong said that this year she will return to celebrate Tet with her family and then return to practice for international tournaments in 2025. Even without receiving a response from the province, the Federation still committed to including Nguyen Thi Huong in its member list.
