The recent clashes on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border have shown that the situation in this region has not yet completely calmed down. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin at an expanded meeting of the collegium of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“A year ago, thanks to the active mediation efforts of Russia, the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh was stopped, but the recent shootings on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border showed that the situation in this region has not yet completely calmed down. To ensure stability, the efforts of the Russian peacekeeping contingent as a guarantor of the ceasefire and the security of the civilian population are in great demand, ”the Russian leader said.
According to Putin, Russian diplomacy can play an important role in continuing efforts to resolve disputed issues between Azerbaijan and Armenia, restore economic ties in the South Caucasus, and unblock vital transport corridors. “We have created a corresponding interstate commission at the level of deputy prime ministers, it is working, and, in my opinion, the prospects there are not bad,” he said.
The head of state stressed that all countries of the region, including Russia, are really interested in a long-term settlement of the problems existing in this region.
