Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Sri Lanka on an official visit in early April next month. This tour is considered to be very important for strengthening India-Sri Lanka relations, increasing bilateral cooperation and discussing important issues. During this visit, PM Modi will discuss major issues like fishermen disputes, business relations, security cooperation and regional participation with the Sri Lankan government.
Last year, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayake visited India, where several important agreements were reached between the two countries. This visit of PM Modi is being done to finalize those agreements and ensure their implementation. This will be his fourth Sri Lanka visit since 2015.
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijita Herath informed during the discussion on budget allocation in Parliament that PM Modi will inaugurate Sampur Solar Energy Station on this tour. It is a 135 MW solar power plant, which has been developed in collaboration with NTPC of India and Sri Lanka’s Cylon Electricity Board (CEB).
External Affairs Minister Herath said that several new MoUs would be signed during this visit to further strengthen India-Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan government also clarified that it will give priority to national interests while maintaining a balance in its foreign policy.
Sri Lanka is an important neighbor and strategic partner of India. Between the current economic and political challenges, this journey will help in giving a new direction to the relationship between the two countries. Cooperation in important areas like trade, energy and security between India and Sri Lanka is expected to get more strength.
