On the evening of December 9, the Vietnamese team faced the Laos team at the Laos national stadium (capital Vientiane), within the first match of Group B – AFF Cup 2024. In the opening match of the regional tournament, Coach Kim Sang-sik did not use the strongest squad, as many pillars were kept on the bench.
In the first half, the Vietnamese team had difficulty finding the opening goal. Coach Kim Sang-sik’s team’s playing style is not really coherent. Meanwhile, the Laos team played extremely confidently, not shrinking on defense and ready to create quality counterattacks.
Hai Long shot left to break the deadlock
In the first 45 minutes of competition, the Vietnamese team had many opportunities but could not take full advantage of them to score. The most notable situation was probably Bui Vi Hao’s header in the 4th minute. However, the 2003-born striker’s finish was not dangerous enough to defeat the Lao goalkeeper.
In the second half, coach Kim Sang-sik made many changes and brought results. In the 58th minute, midfielder Bui Tien Dung crossed the line so Hai Long could run up and shoot a volley from a tight angle, breaking the deadlock for the Vietnamese team.

Tien Linh took advantage of the opponent’s mistakes to score
Just 5 minutes after the opening goal, Nguyen Tien Linh took advantage of a mistake from the Lao player to double the gap to 2-0 for the Vietnamese team with an angled shot. In the 69th minute, Quang Hai delicately put Van Toan in an advantageous position and the former HAGL striker did not miss the opportunity to increase the score to 3-0.
Substitute Nguyen Van Vi scored the last goal for the Vietnamese team in the 83rd minute, with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area.

Rookie Van Vi contributed 1 goal with a strong shot from outside the penalty area
Minute 90+5, the Laos team scored a goal to shorten the gap to 1-4. Bounkong was the one who scored on the penalty spot. This is also the final score of the match.
Having won the match, Vietnam’s playing style still leaves concerns and Mr. Kim still has a lot of work to do when we host Indonesia on December 15 at Viet Tri Stadium.
