Philippines: thousands evacuate in anticipation of Taal volcano eruption

AA / Ankara

The Philippine authorities have ordered the evacuation of thousands of people south of the capital, Manila, due to the activity of the Taal volcano.

Local authorities said the evacuation process began Thursday, in areas near the volcano, shortly after the start of its activity.

They also insisted on the need to evacuate more than 14,000 inhabitants from villages near the volcano.

On the other hand, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has warned citizens not to approach Taal Volcano Island.

The institute raised the alert level to the third level on Thursday after the emission of gas and volcanic fumes.

Taal is the smallest volcano in the world and one of the 24 active in the Philippines.
