Perfumerías Avenida gives in trouble to IDK Euskotren and reaches the semifinals of the Basketball Queen’s Cup

The quarterfinals of the Copa de la Reina Cup opened at La Fonteta with an intense and competitive duel between Perfumerías and IDK Euskotren, who fought for victory until the last minute with a museum defense (60-56) . The Avenida with great difficulty surrendered the proud resistance of the San Sebastian team, which won the first and last quarters and tied the third. But it was not enough for him against the powerful repertoire of his rival. The outstanding performance of Lauren Cox (19 points, 8 rebounds and two assists in 35 minutes on the court, well supported by Mariam Coulibaly (13 points and 7 rebounds), was stopped by the comeback of Maite Cazorla, Leo Rodríguez and Kahleah Copper. Avenida will face the winner of Cadí la Seu-Lointek Gernika on Saturday, while on the other side of the draw, Spar Girona-Movistar Estudiantes and Valencia Basket-Casademont Zaragoza will face each other this Friday.

Avenida, leader of the Endesa Women’s League, with 22 wins and only one loss, suffered ink against fifth in the table, with a balance of 15-10 for IDK from Donostia. Five days after qualifying for the Women’s Euroleague Final Four for the second consecutive season, Perfumerías began the path of reconquering a competition that it lost last year after falling in the semifinals against Uni Girona, but which dominates in the last decade, in which he has won seven of the nine titles that place him at the top of the list of winners (ahead of the seven trophies for Ros Casares and Masnou). A tour that placed Perfumerías as a clear favorite against the meritorious project directed by Azu Muguruza (29 years at the helm of the bench). A team, Club Deportivo Ibaeta, which began as a university training team and is now settled in the Endesa Women’s League, in which there are only two coaches on the benches of the 16 teams, Azu Muguruza and Madelén Urieta, in the Araski from Vitoria.

“We arrived with great enthusiasm and we want that illusion to become a competitive force, to fight it to the fullest, although the Avenida offers few surprises,” explained Muguruza before traveling to Valencia. The challenge was to compete with a team that has only lost five games so far this season between the League and the Euroleague. And, with Mariam Coulibaly as the endurance franchise player and Lauren Cox and Andrijana Cvitkovic leading the points manager, IDK went into battle. The Malian center, sixth in the list of top scorers (14.5 points per game) and third in rebounding (8.4), marked territory in the paint in the early stages and left her rival off the mark (7- 11, m. 9). Avenida appeared with a 3 of 16 field goals (5 of 23 later) and four turnovers (9 at halftime), unable to find cracks in the Euskotren defense, not even with the addition to the rotation of the resigned Adaora Elonu, coming from the Russian Nadezhda.

However, while searching for the lost fluidity, Avenida had the virtue of clinging to the game based on experience, with the struggle of Bella Alaire and the first baskets of Maite Cazorla and Leo Rodríguez. Until Kahleah Copper appeared with six consecutive points that served to break the thicket of her team and change the inertia of the scoreboard. From 9-11 in the first quarter, to 20-13 in the second. Seven points from Lauren Cox and as many from Mariam Coulibaly underpinned Euskotren’s good first half. But a last triple by Leo Rodríguez made the difference (29-24, m. 20).

The extra effort to maintain intensity in defense and attack put Euskotren’s deposit to the test. But Lauren Cox made her way (14 points by then) taking advantage of her advantage in the pairing with Karlie Samuelson and the San Sebastian team kept the pulse after making the rubber in several disadvantages. From 31-24, to 35-34; and from 44-36 to 46-43 before entering the finish line. Mariela Fasoula emerged, holding onto Coulibaly and scoring points at a good pace (10 in 14 minutes at that point). But Cox, who had come to a boil, adjusted the accounts even more (52-50, m. 34). Cazorla and Copper failed from the triple, in opposition to the protagonist of the match, and although Cvitkovic wasted several attacks, Cox returned again to place IDK at the gates of the dream (55-54, at 1m 10s). But the fear of winning succumbed to the responsibility of not losing. Perfumerías Avenida kept the pulse between chills and underpinned the pass to the semifinals from the free kick.
