The Ministry of Companies and Made in Italy (Mimit) has published the annual report on patent activities, highlighting significant growth in the number of patent questions for industrial invention. In 2024, the Italian Patent and Marchi Office (UIBM) recorded 10,148 questions, marking an increase of 7.4% compared to the previous year.
The report, drawn up by the General Management for the industrial property of Mimit, shows a slight flexion in the patent applications for utility model (-1.1%), with 1,830 requests. However, The overall figure of the measures issued by the UIBM (34,358) has undergone a decrease of 7.3%, mainly attributable to the reduction of requests for the European patent validation, following the entry into force of the European patent with a unitary effect.
In 2024, 9,027 national titles were granted, of which 7,532 patents for industrial invention and 1,273 patents for utility model. To these are added the patents granted following the national examination of international applications. The validation of European patents were 20,821, with a variable number of complementary protection certificates for medicines and phytosanitary.
The data confirm the propensity for the innovation of the Italian entrepreneurial system, with a growing interest in the national market by foreign companies, In particular from China, Switzerland, Germany and the United States, as demonstrated by the increase in requests for examination of international patent questions.
