Four Spanish athletes are now competing in the mixed relay race with the possibility of a medal. The first pair is made up of the already successful Álvaro Martín and María Pérez, who took bronze and silver respectively in the 20-kilometre race and are in second place on Wednesday, only behind Ecuador, after more than half of the race has already been completed. The second duo is made up of Miguel Ángel López and Cristina Montesinos. At the same time, the women’s golf tournament has begun, in which the 34-year-old from Pamplona, Carlota Ciganda, number 33 in the world ranking, and the Malaga-born Azahara Muñoz, number 130, will participate. Meanwhile, the men’s handball team faces Egypt in the quarter-finals at 9.30 and in sport climbing, a discipline that was introduced for the first time at the Tokyo Games, Alberto Ginés will compete in the semi-final of the bouldering event. Other disciplines with a chance of medals in which the nationals will participate are sailing (15.43), artistic swimming (19.30), men’s 300m steeplechase athletics, with the performance of Daniel Arce (21.43) and boxing +92, with Ayoub Ghadfa (22.00). Spain is looking for a better performance this Wednesday, after yesterday’s defeat against Brazil (4-2) in the semifinal of the women’s soccer tournament ―in which it started as the favorite as it is the current world champion― and the fall of the men’s field hockey team against the Netherlands in the semifinals (4-0). The positive news came from women’s water polo, thanks to the victory in the quarterfinals against Canada (8-18).
