Pakistan: Khattak’s quarrel with Imran over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province

Own report: The Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and the Minister of Defense Pervez Khattak had a heated exchange. Khattak said he would not vote for Imran because the government had neglected the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The incident took place during a meeting of the ruling coalition’s parliamentary party chaired by the Prime Minister at the Parliament House on Thursday.

The defense minister attended the meeting to pass a controversial Supplementary Finance Bill-2022, commonly called a mini-budget. He is reported to have said he would not vote for Prime Minister Khan unless new gas connections were provided in the underdeveloped province.

Khattak was elected to the National Assembly from Nowshera-I in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province.

According to sources, the Prime Minister got angry over Khattak’s allegations and asked him to stop ‘blackmailing’.

The defense minister walked out of the meeting, but was later recalled by the prime minister.

Khattak alleges the province is being neglected in terms of electricity and gas supply. But people in other provinces are enjoying these benefits to a great extent.

The Defense Minister informed the Prime Minister that if the situation persists, the people of the province will not vote for PTI. Khattak told the media after the meeting that he had not spoken harshly to the Prime Minister or threatened Khan not to vote. He only raised the issue of gas shortages in the province and the ban on new gas connections.

“Imran Khan is my leader and prime minister and I did not tell him that I would not vote for him unless he gave gas connections to the people of KP,” he added.

Khattak said he left the meeting because of the smoke.

“I am a smoker and I just went out of the meeting to smoke,” he said.

Shahbaz Gill, special assistant to the prime minister for political affairs, later confirmed that Khattak had raised the issue of not giving gas to the people of KP.

He said the defense minister had told Energy Minister Hammad Azhar that gas supply projects in KP were being shut down and no new gas connections were being provided to the people of the province.
