Bilal Faizi of Pakistan’s emergency service Rescue 1122 said, “The rescue operation is complete. Two adults were the last to be rescued.” Along with this, the army has also confirmed the successful completion of the rescue operation.
Video of the rescue operation showed a teenager hanging from a rope dangling below the helicopter as the crowd cheered.
Faizi said rescue workers have set up a temporary camp on top of a mountain and first aid is being provided.
Six children were going to school. At that time, around 7:00 in the morning, the chairlift broke in the middle of the journey, which was above the green Allai valley. The residents here used the mosque’s loudspeakers to tell the authorities about this and hundreds of people gathered on both sides of the valley.
Officer Rahman told that in the beginning of the day several military helicopters took off. An airman was lowered from the harness to deliver food, water and medicine.
Acting Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar posted on Twitter, “Great teamwork by the army, rescue department, district administration along with local people.” He had earlier issued instructions to inspect all chairlifts in hilly areas and immediately shut down those that are not safe.
Headmaster Ali Asgar Khan told that the children were students of his Government High School Batangi Pashto. Khan said, “The school is located in a hilly area and there is no safe crossing, so the use of chairlifts is common.”
Abid ur Rehman, a teacher at another school in the area, said around 500 people gathered to watch the rescue operation. “Parents and women started crying for the safety of their children,” he said.
Syed Hammad Haider, a senior official in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said the gondola was hanging about 1,000 to 1,200 feet above the ground.
