The night curfew is being imposed in the state to avoid crowds as part of New Year celebrations in the wake of the escalating Omikron threat. The police will be directed to take strict action against those who go out unnecessarily ignoring the restrictions. The concerned departments will be directed to ensure compliance with the Covid protocol.

The decision to impose night curfew was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The states had given the power to the Home Ministry to announce the ban in the wake of the spread of Omikron cases in the country. Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla forwarded the proposal to the states. “The central government has also directed that strict control of Covid be maintained in the country till January 31, 2022. It has been directed to all the Chief Secretaries of the States and Union Territories to maintain strict control at the local and district levels in view of the current situation,” the letter said.

In the letter, Ajay Bhalla states that all States and Union Territories should take all precautionary measures. No negligence should be shown in taking precautionary measures. Local restrictions can be imposed to avoid congestion during the festive seasons. The Center has issued new directives following the escalation of Omikron cases in the country.
