- The Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2020 was awarded to Emmanuel Sharpenchi and Jennifer Doudna
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the year 2021 was announced on Wednesday. This year’s award was won by Benjamin List and David W.C. Macmillan (David WC MacMillan) for the development of asymmetric organocatalysis. Through this award, those works are often honored, which are being practically used extensively today.
Great contribution made in pharmaceutical research
These two scientists have developed a precise and new tool for molecular construction. This tool has had a huge impact on pharmaceutical research. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Stockholm, Sweden.
Discovered the third type of catalysis
Catalysis is a fundamental tool for chemists, but researchers have long believed that there were, in principle, only two types of catalysts available. The first of these was metals and the second was enzymes. The Academy stated that in 2000 Benjamin List and David Macmillan developed a third type of catalysis independently of each other. This is called asymmetric organocatalysis and is formed on small organic molecules.
What is given as a prize?
Under the Nobel Prize, a gold medal, an amount of one crore Swedish krona (about Rs 8.20 crore) is given. Swedish krona is the currency of Sweden. The award is named after Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel.
what is nobel prize
The Nobel Prizes are distributed on 10 December every year since the fifth death anniversary of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel for his outstanding contributions in various fields. Nobel invented the explosive dynamite. He was very sad because of his invention being used in war. As an atonement for this, he arranged for the Nobel Prizes in his will. He wrote in his will that the majority of his wealth be kept in a fund and annual interest thereof should be rewarded to those who made outstanding contributions to mankind.
The series of Nobel Prizes started from the year 1901
The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in the year 1901 in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Peace. It was the fifth death anniversary of Alfred Nobel. Nobel was born in Stockholm in 1833. His father used to make war weapons. Later on, Noble also became a great scientist of chemistry. In the year 1867, he invented the extremely explosive dynamite. Nobel died on 10 December 1896 in San Remo, Italy. Noble was actually a follower of peace. In the last days of his life, he had great remorse for his inventions that caused great destruction in the war. As an atonement for this, he had arranged Nobel Prizes in his will and wrote that most of his wealth should be awarded to people who have done excellent work towards the welfare of mankind.
