Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum announced that 19 Nigerien soldiers were killed in the ambush set out on Saturday by unidentified armed men at a Nigerien army detachment in the locality of Boni, in western Niger, near the border with Burkina Faso. A previous report reported 15 soldiers killed.
“I would like to pay tribute to our nineteen soldiers who fell following the explosion of a mine laid by terrorists in the department of Torodi”, said Mohamed Bazoum in a message sent Monday to the Nation, on the eve of the celebration of the 61st anniversary of the accession of Niger to independence.
On Saturday, a detachment of the Nigerien army was ambushed by unidentified gunmen near the border with Burkina Faso. In a statement released on Sunday, the Defense Ministry said 15 soldiers were killed, 7 wounded while 6 others are missing.
