For the second straight week, CJ Stroud led a last-minute winning possession, finishing with 356 yards passing yesterday and leading the Houston Texans to a 30-27 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.
With the game tied at 27 and with 1:33 left, Stroud drove the Texans (5-5) 55 yards in six plays to set up a 38-yard field goal by Matt Ammendola as time expired. Ammendola was only signed Thursday because Ka’imi Fairbairn suffered a quadriceps injury a week earlier.
“The thing about CJ is he shows a lot of calm in the midst of chaos,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. “He doesn’t falter. He is confident that he is going to make plays.”
Stroud connected with Dalton Schultz for 25 yards and Noah Brown for 22 more on the decisive possession. Brown finished with seven receptions and a career-high 172 yards, while Devin Singletary rushed for 150 yards and a score on 30 carries.
Joe Burrow threw for 357 yards and two touchdowns for Cincinnati (5-4), but was intercepted twice in the fourth quarter, which ended up weighing against his team.
“This is a tough loss,” Burrow said. “I thought we were going to get the result. At the end of the day we didn’t make any plays. It’s disappointing”.
Stroud, 22, the second overall pick in this year’s draft, threw for a touchdown and scored on the ground. Last week he took over with less than a minute left and led the Texans to the winning score against Tampa Bay.
“(The Bengals) knew that everything would be decided until the last moment. We knew it too,” Stroud said. “I just went to DeMeco and said, ‘Man, I’m on your side, we’re going to win this game.’ He looked me straight in the eyes and said, ‘I will trust you.’”
