New dam to be built at Mullaperiyar; Vidy Satheesan writes letter to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition leader VD Satheesan has written to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin asking him to build a new dam at Mullaperiyar to ensure the security of Kerala. VD Satheesan has written to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister asking him to give his full support to Kerala’s demand for a new dam.

VD Satheesan said that water for Tamil Nadu and security for Kerala is the ideal position for both the states. With the water level in Mullaperiyar reaching 136 feet, there is growing concern in Kerala. He said he was also concerned about the safety of the dam, which is more than 125 years old.

The demand for construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar has been high in recent days. Following this, the Leader of the Opposition wrote a letter to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on the issue. Earlier, Water Resources Minister Roshi Augustine had said that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan would hold discussions with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on the Mullaperiyar issue. He said the Tamil Nadu-Kerala chief ministers’ talks would be held in December.

The Water Resources Minister’s response came in the backdrop of the dispute over the water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam reaching the Supreme Court again. The apex court had directed Kerala and Tamil Nadu to discuss the issue and take a decision on the water level in the dam.

An agreement on the Mullaperiyar issue will be reached at a meeting of the chief ministers of the two states. Roshi Augustine said the necessary steps would be taken to build a new dam. He is in constant communication with Tamil Nadu. Officers were assigned to monitor the situation at all times. The minister said that in case of any need to carry more water and to raise the spillway shutters and drain the excess water, notice should be given 24 hours in advance.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had said yesterday that the safety of the Mullaperiyar Dam should not be created unnecessarily. The CM had said in the assembly that there was a fear of an accident in Mullaperiyar and that legal action would be taken against those who campaigned on social media.
