At least 28 people were killed and 16 others injured in a bus accident in Nepal’s Mugu district on Tuesday. Police said that the bus coming from Nepalganj towards Gamgadhi, the headquarters of Mugu district, fell into the Pina Jhayari river. The accident took place in Chhayanath Rara Municipal Corporation area.
People were returning home for Durga Puja
Most of the passengers on the bus were returning to their homes from different places on the occasion of Durga Puja. Nepalese Army helicopter has been dispatched from Surkhet for relief work. Mugu is famous for the Rara Lake, located 650 km north-west of Kathmandu.
42 people were on the bus
Mugu Chief District Officer Rom Bahadur Mahat said that 24 passengers died on the spot in the accident at Pina village of Mugu district of Karnali province. Besides, four others died on the way to the hospital. Mahat told from the spot that 42 people, including the bus staff, were in the bus when the tragic accident took place.
The injured were sent for treatment by helicopter
Fourteen of the injured have been sent to Nepalgunj by helicopter and regular flights. Most of the dead are students and migrant workers returning from India for Dashain, Nepal’s biggest festival. The bus was on its way from the provincial capital Surkhet to Mugu’s Gamgarhi.
Bus tire burst accident
Mahat said that our preliminary investigation based on the witnesses suggests that the bus lost its balance after a tire burst on a rough stretch of road leading to Gamgarhi. Due to which she fell into the river in a ditch rolling from a great height. Eight people were killed in a jeep accident on Monday at Ghandruk in Kaski district of Gandaki province.
