NATO condemns Belarus’ use of migrants as leverage on neighbors

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on Friday condemned Belarus’ use of the dossier of “illegal immigration” at its borders, as a means of pressure on neighboring countries, with the aim of to achieve political ends.

The Alliance said in a statement that the North Atlantic Council strongly condemns Belarus’ provocation of a wave of immigrants and refugees entering the borders of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia, and its use as a political lever.

NATO underlined the solidarity and support of its members with the aforementioned countries, in light of the current circumstances, and condemned the endangerment by Minsk of the lives of migrants.

“We will be vigilant against the risks of escalating tensions and provocations at Belarusian borders with Poland, Lithuania and Latvia, and we will monitor the consequences of these actions on the security of the Alliance”, it reads. from the same source.

NATO called on Belarus to end these measures, respect human rights and comply with international law.

On Monday, many asylum seekers attempted to cross the Polish border from Belarus. There are currently around 4,000 asylum seekers at the borders of the two countries, according to the Polish news agency.

The European Union accuses Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of having coordinated the arrival of the wave of migrants and refugees in the east of the bloc, in response to European sanctions imposed on his country after the “brutal repression” of his regime against the opposition.
