A trial court in Delhi has ordered the immediate release of Natasha Narwal, Devangana Kalita and Asif Iqbal Tanha, who broke the cage on Thursday, June 17. Along with this, the court has also rejected the application of Delhi Police in which time was sought for verification of the addresses and sureties of the three activists.
On Tuesday, June 15, JNU student Devangana Kalita, Natasha Narwal and Jamia student Asif Iqbal Tanha were granted bail by the Delhi High Court, but before their release, the Delhi Police had filed a petition opposing the bail of the three students.
After not being released immediately on Tuesday despite the Delhi High Court order, the trio had moved the trial court.
Delhi’s Karkardooma Court’s Additional Sessions Magistrate Ravinder Bedi had yesterday deferred the immediate release of Devangana Kalita and Natasha Narwal due to their addresses and other verifications. The court had asked the Delhi Police to submit the verification report at the earliest.
During the hearing, Delhi Police had sought more time for verification of the three. It has been said from the police that the permanent address of these activists is in Jharkhand, Assam and Rohtak, so there is a problem in travel for verification of addresses. But it has been said on behalf of these three that all are residents of Delhi and were arrested from here only Delhi’s address is on the documents. After which the judge had said a little that this much time cannot be taken for verification, Delhi’s address can be verified. The judge had reserved his decision.
On the other hand, Delhi Police has filed a petition in the Supreme Court opposing the bail of the three students. Whatever has been heard today and that petition is also expected to be decided today.
All three were arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
