Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday described the election contest for Varanasi parliamentary constituency as a fight between the poor and billionaires and said that Narendra Modi is not going to become the Prime Minister after the election. Prime Minister Modi is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Varanasi while Congress has fielded its Uttar Pradesh unit chief Ajay Rai against him. In the state, Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress are contesting the elections under the ‘India’ alliance and in the seat sharing, Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency has been given to Congress.
Rahul Gandhi said that this election is not between ‘Prime Minister Modi’ but only between Modi and Rai. Addressing an election rally in Varanasi in support of Ajay Rai, the former national president of Congress Gandhi said, “It is being said in the media that Ajay Rai is fighting against the Prime Minister of India. I want to tell the people of Kashi one thing that this fight is between the poor and the billionaires.” He said, “In this election, there is a contest between Narendra Modi and Ajay Rai. But I am telling you with guarantee that Narendra Modi will not be the Prime Minister of this country on June 4.
That is why this election is not between the prime ministerial candidate and Ajay Rai. This election is only between Narendra Modi and Ajay Rai.” Gandhi said, ”I am saying with guarantee that there is a tough fight between the two and Ajay Rai can win this fight, he can win with a huge majority, because this fight is between the auto rickshaw drivers of Banaras, the Banarasi saree makers, the farmers, labourers and billionaires of Banaras.” Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also addressed the rally. In the seventh and final phase of the Lok Sabha elections, voting will take place in Varanasi on June 1.
