The Ecuadorian government confirmed that the six people prosecuted for the death of Fernando Villavicencio, the presidential candidate murdered on August 9 in the middle of the electoral campaign, have been found dead in the Penal del Litoral, on the outskirts of Guayaquil.
“All the PPL (persons deprived of liberty) are of Colombian nationality and were involved in the murder of Fernando Villavicencio,” reported the National Service for Persons Deprived of Liberty (SNAI).
The SNAI added that the dead are Jhon Gregore R., Andrés Manuel M., Adey Fernando G., Camilo Andrés R., Sules Osmin C. and José Neyder L.
The cause of death was not specified. A source cited by the Spanish newspaper El País suggests that they were hanged.
The lifeless bodies were recovered in pavilion 7 of the prison, where the Colombian citizens were held.

Fernando Villavicencio was assassinated a few days before the presidential debate.
The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, who was in New York and had planned a tour to South Korea, announced that he will return to the country early.
“In the next few hours I will return to Ecuador to attend to this emergency. Neither complicity nor cover-up, here the truth will be known,” the president published on his account on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
