NBC News reported that US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had a rare joint appearance after the election, when they spoke at a party of the Democratic National Committee in Washington DC on December 15 ( local time).
The two leaders thanked party members for everything they have done for Ms. Harris’s presidential campaign efforts and Mr. Biden’s presidency over the past four years. Donors contributed more than $2 billion to the Democratic Party’s campaign efforts in the recent presidential election.
President Biden, with just over a month left in his term, spoke about his legacy and the lasting impact he wants to leave on America.
“One thing I have always believed about public service, and especially about the presidency, is the importance of asking ourselves whether we have left the country in better shape than when we found it. Are we here yet?” he said and said he could answer with a resounding “yes”.
“Thanks to all of you gathered here, we can be proud that we have a better America today than we did four years ago,” he said.
He praised the success of the CHIPS and Science Acts, but also said that the money invested in US chip factories will not produce economic benefits for many years.
CHIPS is an acronym for Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors. The CHIPS and Science Act spends nearly $53 billion to promote research and development for the US semiconductor industry.
The leader said many of the laws he passed will take time to see effectiveness, and called on Democratic members to keep faith.
For her part, Ms. Harris thanked everyone for working tirelessly on her election campaign.
“The most important thing throughout the entire campaign, including those 107 days, is that all of you have rallied. You have united. You have opened your homes. You have reached out to your Your friends and your family. You put your personal capital and I mean your relationships on the line to talk to people, because you really care,” Ms. Harris said.
Despite losing the election to Donald Trump, Ms. Harris still urged her party not to feel defeated. “Our spirit is not defeated. We are not defeated. Let’s make that clear. We are strong,” Ms. Harris emphasized.
According to Reuters, Ms. Harris’s future is unclear, although some Democrats have called for her to run for Governor of California.
Mr. Biden said he plans to remain active in politics and work to heal divisions in America. “The bad news for all of you is that I’m not going anywhere. We’ll continue to coordinate,” he joked.
