SAN SALVADOR – Sheynnis Palacios, representative of Nicaragua, became the first Central American to win the Miss Universe contest in its 72nd edition, held in El Salvador this Saturday night..
The winner of the contest succeeds the American R’Bonney Gabriel, Miss Universe 2022.
Palacios, who gave the surprise and had placed herself among the favorites of the contest, was ahead of the representative of Thailand, Anntonia Porsildwas the first runner-up.
Moraya Wilson, from Australia, was chosen as the second finalist of the contest, which will be held in Mexico in 2024.
These three finalists were chosen from a group of five, which was completed by Puerto Rico and Colombia.
Who is Sheynnis Palacios, the new Miss Universe
Born on May 30, 2000, The Nicaraguan has a degree in social communication from the Jesuit Universidad Centroamericana (UCA)where she played volleyball, is the host and presenter of the program “Understand your mind”, a social project that she launched after battling anxiety, with which she seeks to help other people and that addresses different topics on mental health.
In 2016, when she was 16 years old, she participated in the Miss Teen Nicaragua pageant, which she won. She participated in Miss Teen Universe 2017 and placed in the Top 10.
In 2020, at the age of 20, she competed in Miss World Nicaragua, and won the crown.
In 2020 and 2021 the Miss World contest was canceled due to the covid-19 pandemic, and in 2022 the young Palacios represented her country in the contest held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she was among the 40 most beautiful women in the earth.
In the 72nd edition of the contest, which was held in San Salvador for the second time, it disregarded “inclusion” and “diversity” by including two married candidates with children, which is possible after the change in rules that allows Married, pregnant, divorced or women with children, two transgender women and one plus-size woman compete.
