Xinhua news agency reported that the fire broke out at the market in Zhangjiakou at about 8:40 a.m. on January 4 local time and the fire was controlled more than an hour later.
Images from the scene showed the fire engulfing the market, creating thick smoke. Firefighters were soon on the scene to put out the fire. Search and rescue work was completed by noon. The injured were treated at the hospital and their condition is not life-threatening.
Local officials sent their condolences to the victim’s family and prioritized support for those affected by this accident. According to Reuters, the market has been open since 2011 and specializes in selling vegetables and other daily consumer goods.
The cause of the fire is currently being investigated. Channel NewsAsia said the source of the fire could come from gas cylinders, charcoal or cigarette butts.
