Congress leader Manish Tewari and Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi got into a heated argument on Twitter on Friday after Tiwari said that Tehelka Patrika founder and editor Tarun Tejpal was “honorably acquitted” in a sexual harassment case. To this, Chaturvedi termed his remarks as ‘shameful’.
The debate started when Tiwari praised Tejpal in a tweet and said, “Those talented and intelligent people who were my seniors in college, whose image was tarnished, politically persecuted and now acquitted in a dignified manner.” Tarun Tejpal has written the initial details of his new book ‘Animal Farm’. Welcome back friend.’
To this Priyanka Chaturvedi reacted sharply and said in a sarcastic manner, “Today I came to know that Tarun Tejpal was ‘honourably acquitted’ and he was subjected to ‘political harassment’.”
Rajya Sabha member Chaturvedi took a jibe at Tiwari, saying that rejecting the talk of sexual harassment of a woman shows his ill-conceived thinking. “They feel that they can treat women as they please and laugh at serious crimes,” he said. Shameful.’
Hitting back at Chaturvedi, Tiwari said that unlike him, as a lawyer, he knows how to read a judgment and respect it.
“Tarun Tejpal was tried and found innocent. this is true. The Goa government has gone to the High Court. If you have any problem then tell it in High Court.
Responding to Congress MP Tiwari, Chaturvedi said the Goa government has challenged the district court’s decision and hence the ‘celebration’ can be stopped if he is acquitted.
He said, “Manish Tiwari, being only a lawyer and being able to read the judgment doesn’t make you rise to a higher pedestal. It is a free platform and I have the right to express my views like you have the right to pat an alleged rapist on the back.’
Tiwari said, ‘Please don’t cross the threshold of defamation. I will be sad to take a fellow MP and my former colleague to court.
Priyanka Chaturvedi termed Tiwari’s statement as a threat to “silence” him and said that as a lawyer he should know that he was not even tagged in his (Chaturvedi’s) first tweet and he “dumped” into it.
He also said that ignorance of law is better than ignorance of morals.
In fact, a sessions court in Goa had acquitted Tejpal on May 21 last in 2013 for sexually assaulting a former female colleague inside the lift of a hotel in the state. The allegations pertain to the incident of November 7, 2013.
